American Eskimo Dog – The Comedic Companion

Dog of the Month!

Woof woof woof woof woof! My name is American Eskimo. You can call me Eskie! I can’t believe I’m picked for Dog of the Month! How exciting! On behalf of all my Eskie friends, I thank you.

My Colorful Origin

Well, where do I start? Hmmm, so much to tell about myself. I’ll try to make it short and not bore you with the details. Well, I’m originally from Germany and was called the German Spitz. I’ve had a couple of name changes, but what’s a name, really? I’m still part of the Spitz family, and I’ve still got heart! After coming to North America, I was named the American Spitz, but now I’m called American Eskimo. Not sure why because we weren’t involved with Eskimos. I’ve heard rumors from my grandmother through my great grandparents and so on down the family tree that it may be because of the first World War hostility towards the Germans. Anyway, my family comes from a line of entertainers, some were even in the circus doing tricks like walking a tightrope! Pffft! Who said cats were the only nimble ones!

My Multi-Purpose

There’s a lot of things I can do! I have siblings who are in agility competitions, I am not because I like to expand my talents beyond just the physical stuff. I can entertain you with other tricks like spinning, shaking your hand, finding the hidden treat, dancing, solving a problem and much more. There’s nothing you can’t teach me. I’m a fantastic watchdog! I will let you know when someone is coming, my hearing and eyesight are impeccable. I can hear things outside the house like you wouldn’t believe. I’m so alert you’ll hear my low growl when that happens. When a stranger is outside, forget it! I’ll bark like there’s no tomorrow! I love to bark, bark, bark! Above all, I’m the companion you’ll never forget.

My Quirky Personality

Not to brag or anything, but I HAVE been known to have a very high intelligence level. I learn swift and am eager-to-please, happy-go-lucky, and very obedient. I have a fantastic sense of humor! Are you surprised? Why would you be? Anyone who knows me knows I am a goofball and a bit of a trickster and jokester! I’m not hyper, nor am I lazy. I’m a creative problem-solver! I can be friendly to strangers and love kids as long as I am appropriately socialized as a pup. Socialization is a must, or I will have a hard time trusting others. I am sensitive to other’s feelings because I am sweet and have a huge heart! I am very loyal to my family. I may have a tendency to be more attached to one person but doesn’t mean I don’t cherish the rest of my family. I love to cuddle and be with them. I love to please them and make them laugh. Don’t be fooled! As playful as I can be, I also take my property and family seriously. I am always on watch. Lastly, when you’re sad and lonely, I’m very skilled in cheering you up. I will be by your side. I am your confidant.

My Size and Needs

I come in 3 different sizes. Toy, Miniature, and Standard. Toy (9-12″), Miniature (12-15″), and Standard (15-19″). There is NO ‘one size fits all’ with me! I’m not an adrenaline junky, but I’ll still need to be exercised regularly. I love going for walks, but who doesn’t? And I love the snow! I don’t like to be left alone for too long because I love being with my family. When I’m not getting my needs met, I’ll let you know! Warning to humans who don’t like hair…I shed a lot! But it’s really soft fur so stop cringing! Just brush me often, that’s all. I have a coat with an oil that naturally repels dirt. It makes for a simple bath, or if it’s dried mud, you can easily brush it out. I have a double coat that keeps me warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I take pride in my coat, so it needs to be brushed and maintained to prevent mats.

Life with an Eskie

Well, there you have it! On the last note, I’d like to say an experienced dog owner tends to understand my quirky personality better. Remember what I said before if I don’t get my needs met, I will let you know! Meaning, my mind likes to be stimulated. I don’t like to be bored for too long. I don’t want to be away from my family too much. So inexperienced, unknowledgeable dog owners will not fare well with me.

Lastly, one more thing, let me warn you, once you’ve had one Eskie in your life, you’ll never turn back. Once an Eskie lover, always an Eskie lover. Woof woof woof woof woof!
